What is the First Stage Approval for Spousal Sponsorship?

First Stage Approval is part of Canada’s Inland Spousal Sponsorship process. It basically means that IRCC has assessed the sponsor’s eligibility and determined that the relationship between the sponsor and the applicant is genuine. Achieving this approval is essential before the second stage, where the applicant’s admissibility to Canada will be assessed.

Steps Involved in First Stage Approval

  1. Submission of Application: The first step in “First Stage Approval” is, you need to submit the documents for both sponsor and the applicant, which signifies genuine proof of the relationship, which includes documents, forms, and other verification proofs.
  2. Acknowledgment of Receipt: Once you submit the documents, you will receive the acknowledgement of receipt of the application and then the file number.
  3. Eligibility Assessment of Sponsor: IRCC will then check the eligibility criteria for sponsor and then financial stability, relationship status, residency status and other important things.
  4. Assessment of Relationship: All the evidence provided by you will be assessed to verify the genuine relationship. This can include photos, communication records, joint financial documents, etc.
  5. First Stage Approval (AIP): If IRCC is satisfied with the sponsor’s eligibility and the relationship’s genuineness, they will issue an Approval in Principle. At this stage, the sponsored person may be eligible for a work permit.

Q3: What happens if my application is refused at the first stage?

A3: If the application is refused, IRCC will provide reasons for the refusal. You may appeal the decision or reapply with additional supporting documents.
