Losing a PR Card is a nightmare. Since it takes years of hard work and dedication to obtain that one PR Card and then losing it is a nightmare. Luckily, if you have a Permanent Resident (PR) card lost or got stolen, you won’t lose your permanent resident status.

There are a few steps that we’re gonna discuss what to do if your PR card has been lost or stolen and in some cases never received a new copy of your PR Card.

PR Card Lost vs Stolen

Before you go ahead with steps on what to do, we need to understand what’s the major difference between PR Card lost vs stolen.

Steps to take 

Lost PR Card

  1. Search Thoroughly: You must check all the possible locations where PR Card could have been lost. Make sure you search for 1 or 2 days before filing a complain.
  2. Report to IRCC: If you’re unable to find the your lost PR Card, you must fill out IMM 5451.
  3. Apply for Replacement: Complete IMM 5444 with the required documents and pay the associated fee ($50).
  4. Monitor Status: Wait for the file be processed, this could take anywhere around 2-4 weeks. Check processing times on the IRCC website.
  5. Travel Needs: If you’re traveling outside Canada you must apply for a PRTD to get re-entry at the port.

Destroyed PR Card

  1. Collect Pieces: Keep damaged card pieces together until you get your new PR Card.
  2. Report to IRCC: Fill out IMM 5451.
  3. Apply for Replacement: Complete IMM 5444 with required documents and fee ($50).
  4. Monitor Status: Wait for the decision to be make, usually around 2-4 weeks.
  5. Travel Needs: You need to apply for the PRTD if you’re traveling abroad.

Stolen PR Card

  1. Report to Police: If you’re sure your PR card has been stolen, then first step you must take is to file a local police report.
  2. Report to IRCC: Fill out IMM 5451 and include police report if possible.
  3. Apply for Replacement: Fill out IMM 5444 with required documents and fee ($50).
  4. Monitor Status: Wait for your decision to be made.

Steps to File a Police Report

If you’re sure that your PR card has been stolen, you must report it to the police station and use that report in your application for replacement.

1. Identify the Appropriate Police Department

You must find the nearest police station or the one responsible for the area where the loss or theft occurred and report the missing PR card report.

2. Prepare Information:

Gather all necessary details, such as when and where you lost the card or when and where it was stolen.

Have your identification documents and any other relevant information ready. Give information about people who can be mentioned to speak.

3. Visit the Police Station

Go to the police station in person. Some areas might allow you to file a report online or over the phone, so check the specific procedures for your location.

Make sure to be honest and clear with all the information about your PR card, for example, where did you see it last time.

4. File the Report

Provide all the necessary details to the police officer. Ensure you get a copy of the police report or a reference number. This copy of the report you can use it in applying for PR Card replacement.

5. Request Documentation

Ask for a copy of the police report or a written statement confirming the filing of the report. This document is crucial for your PR card replacement application.

Using the Police Report for PR Card Replacement

1. Complete the Solemn Declaration

Fill out the Solemn Declaration Concerning a Lost, Stolen, Destroyed or Never-Received Permanent Resident Card (IMM 5451).

2. Attach the Police Report:

Include a copy of the police report or the written statement you received when filing your report.

3. Submit Your Replacement Application:

  • Complete the Application for a Permanent Resident Card (IMM 5444).
  • Attach the police report, the solemn declaration, and other required documents.
  • Pay the application fee and submit the application to IRCC.

What should I do if I never received my PR card?

I lost my PR card. Can I still travel?
