Overview
The recent announcement from Canada regarding an immediate cap on international students has caused concern among Indian students who were planning to pursue higher education in the country.
Canada, a popular choice among immigrants, has eased their policies, high acceptance rates, and abundant opportunities. However, the issuance of study visas for international students has been temporarily restricted by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). According to data released by the IRCC, it is projected that the cap for 2024 will lead to approximately 360,000 authorized study permits, indicating a 35% reduction from the estimates for 2023.
In response to recent reductions in study permit caps, the IRCC has revealed modifications to the eligibility criteria for Post Graduation Work Permits (PGWP). Effective September 2024, international students enrolled in programs governed by curriculum licensing arrangements will be ineligible.
This change targets oversight issues within private colleges. Moreover, graduates from master’s programs and short graduate-level programs will now be eligible to apply for a 3-year work permit only
