How to Extend/Restore Study permit in Canada

Extending your study permit or restoring your status in Canada is crucial for international students wishing to continue their academic pursuits smoothly. A study permit is typically granted for the duration of a program, and it’s essential to apply for an extension before it expires to maintain legal status in the country. The extension process involves demonstrating continued enrollment, satisfactory academic progress, and financial stability.

Restoring your study permit

On the other hand, if your study permit has already expired, you must apply for a restoration of status within 90 days of the expiration date. Restoration, however, may incur additional fees, and it’s vital to provide a reasonable explanation for the delay in your application.

Ensuring that your immigration status is in order is not only a legal requirement but also essential for maintaining access to education, work opportunities, and the overall Canadian experience.

Things you need to know before applying for study permit extension:

  • Apply for a study permit extension at least 30 days before its expiration if you wish to continue studying in Canada.
  • Familiarize yourself with the online application process, including the required documents and instructions outlined in the application guide.
  • In case your study permit has already expired, apply for a new study permit to restore your status as a temporary resident if you intend to stay in Canada and continue your studies.
  • If you travel outside Canada, ensure you have the necessary documents for re-entry, maintaining your legal status throughout your academic journey

Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

If you’re from a country needing a visa for Canada, your visa (called Temporary Resident Visa or TRV) might expire when your study permit does. Even though having a valid TRV isn’t a must for studying, it lets you enter or come back to Canada. If you plan to travel outside Canada while studying, you might need to renew your TRV. Remember, the main permission for studying is your study permit.

When to Extend Your Study Permit

  • Apply for a permit extension at least 30 days before it expires if you want to continue studying.
  • Ensure your passport doesn’t expire simultaneously, as the permit can’t be extended beyond your passport’s expiry.
  • If you apply before the permit expires, you can keep studying under the same conditions until a decision is made, but this only applies if you stay in Canada.
  • If you finish your studies earlier than expected, the permit expires on the date marked or 90 days after completing your studies, whichever comes first.

When do the 90 days begin?

The 90-day period starts when you receive your first notification from the school, like an email or letter stating you finished your program, or when you get your degree, diploma, or certificate. If you can’t prove the notification date, we’ll use the earliest date on the document, and we might verify it with your school.

Apply to Extend your Study Permit

  1. Start Early: Begin the application process at least 30 days before your current study permit is set to expire.
  2. Online Application: Visit the official website of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). Log in to your MyCIC account or create one if you don’t have it.
  3. Complete the Application Form: Fill out the online study permit extension application form with accurate and up-to-date information.
  4. Document Gathering: Gather all necessary documents, including proof of enrollment, a valid passport, and financial support documents. Ensure documents adhere to the specified format and size requirements.
  5. Pay the Application Fee: Pay the required application fee using the accepted payment methods. Keep the payment confirmation for your records.
  6. Application Submission: Carefully review the application to avoid errors. Submit the completed application electronically through your MyCIC account.
  7. Check Application Status: Regularly check the status of your application through your MyCIC account. Be patient, as processing times can vary.
  8. Respond to Requests: If additional information or documents are requested, respond promptly. Check your MyCIC account regularly for any updates or messages.
  9. Continue Studying: Continue your studies under the conditions of your current permit while awaiting the decision on the extension.
  10. Download New Permit: If the extension is approved, download and print the new study permit from your MyCIC account. Keep the new permit and confirmation of the extension with your passport.

Documents Required For Your Extension Of Work Permit

Mandatory for All Applicants:

  1. Proof of enrollment for the upcoming term.
  2. Copy of a valid passport.
  3. Evidence of financial support: Must demonstrate the ability to support oneself and accompanying family members in Canada. Provide proof of tuition for one academic year and funds for living expenses.
  4. Digital photo.
  5. Completed Application to Change Conditions, Extend my Stay, or Remain in Canada as a Student [IMM 5709].

Additional Requirements for Some Applicants:

  • A medical examination may be necessary.
  • Biometrics may be required.
  • Depending on individual circumstances, additional documents may be requested.

Ensure all documentation is accurate, up-to-date, and meets the specific requirements outlined by IRCC. Visit the official IRCC website for comprehensive information on the total amounts required and any additional conditions that may apply to your case
