If you’re someone looking to sponsor your parents or grandparents in 2024 to Canada, you would need to sponsor them through with Parents and Grandparents Program (PGP).

What is the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP)?

The Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program (PGP) allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to become permanent residents of Canada. This is the key program of IRCC for family reunification initiative, which supports families to be together and provides sponsored individuals with permanent residency upon arrival in Canada.

When Will the Parent and Grandparent Sponsorship Program Open in 2024?

The PGP for 2024 is scheduled to open in October 2024, the last PGP was on May 2024. IRCC will issue invitations to apply (ITA) to potential sponsors who had previously submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2020. These invitations will be sent over a two-week period​ so make sure you have your files ready.

For the 2024 intake, IRCC plans to accept up to 20,500 completed applications, an increase from the 15,000 applications accepted in 2023, and every year IRCC will continue to expand the Applications under Parents and Grandparents sponsorship.

1. How will sponsors be selected?

Sponsors will be selected through a randomized lottery system. Those who submitted an interest to sponsor form in 2024 will be considered for this year’s invitations. There is no set criteria for who will be selected, it is a completely random selection system.

2. What should I do if I receive an ITA?

If you receive an ITA, you must submit a complete application package through the Permanent Residence portal or the Representative Permanent Residence Portal within the deadline stated in the invitation email. If you miss even single document, no additional document request will be sent and an incomplete or late applications will be returned.

3. What happens if I do not receive an ITA?

The selection is completely based on random lottery system, if you don’t get selected this year, you will get chance to for next year. Or you can apply for Super Visa, which allows parents and grandparents to visit and stay in Canada for up to five years and maximum of 2 years of stay in Canada and you can extend it too.

How to Apply for the PGP

  1. Submit Interest to Sponsor Form: The first step is to submit an interest to sponsor form, this form usually not available all the time, however, you can check reopen and other information on the Interest to Sponsor form here.
  2. Wait for ITA: Once you submit the application you will need to wait for the draw to conduct and if you get selected, you will receive an invitation. Invitations are issued based on a lottery system.
  3. Complete Application: If invited, complete the application package, ensuring all required documents and fees are included.
  4. Submit Application: Apply through the Permanent Residence portal before the deadline stated in the invitation email.
  5. Await Decision: Once your receive the invitation and submit the application, all left is waiting. You may asked to upload any additional documents if required, however, it will take around 3-4 months depending on the file.

Sponsors must meet the MNI for the 3 taxation years preceding the date of application. This ensures that sponsors can financially support their parents or grandparents​. You can check the updated MNI requirement on IRCC website for parents and grandparents sponsor.

2. Can I have a co-signer?

Yes, a co-signer (spouse or common-law partner) can help meet the MNI requirement. The co-signer must also meet the eligibility criteria and agree to the sponsorship undertaking​.

3. What is the duration of the sponsorship undertaking?

The sponsorship undertaking is for 20 years (10 years for sponsors in Quebec). This means the sponsor commits to financially support the sponsored individual for 20 years of time period​.

4. Can I sponsor more than one parent or grandparent?

Yes, you can sponsor more than one person, but you must submit separate applications and meet the income requirements for the total number of people sponsored​​.

5. What is the Super Visa?

The Super Visa allows parents and grandparents to visit Canada as long-term visitors. It is valid for up to 10 years, and visa holders can stay in Canada for up to 5 years at a time with the option to extend​​.
